Renault of France Earthenware

What is Earthenware?

The term “earthenware” refers to a ceramic material which has become very commonly used in the manufacturing of decorative furnishings and dinnerware product lines. Although the different materials that earthenware is comprised of vary from one country to the next and differ somewhat between the individual makers, the most common materials are:

o Ball clay – 25%

o Feldspar – 15%

o Kaolin – 28%

o Quartz – 32%

Despite the fact that the red earthenware (which is made from red clays) is the most familiar and recognized type, buff and white colored earthenware clays are becoming more available commercially, as well as being commonly used in the manufacturing process.

Earthenware begins as a bisque or unglazed piece. Although the types of materials used will be the determining factor as to the temperature that the piece is fired and glazed at, the majority of the earthenware out there use a temperature range between 1800 and 2100
