Is an Online Degree Right For You?

Posted By BarryGoodknight on May 17, 2010

Online degrees are degrees acquired via the Internet. Many existing colleges and universities have online degree programs, also known as “Distance Learning” available in various fields of majors and subjects. Distance learning has become very popular due to the availability, flexibility and affordability. This method of learning has become designed for people who cannot attend class on a campus, or for people who may have children to tend to all hours of a day. If a student is taking courses on-line it means that he or she will be learning on their own time by reading course material, working on course activities, writing assignments and perhaps working with other students through an interactive web conference. This method of learning enables people to pursue their education at their own speed and schedule. Full-time classes do not require as much effort and time and money are saved in commuting.

For payment of these classes, scholarships and financial aid are available. Federal student aid started out as being ineligible for online degree programs unless the majority of a student’s classes were campus-based. This law has recently been appealed and is available for students. Most institutions will give students different loan options to compare and may be able to educate students on consolidating any outstanding loans they may already have.

Some technology skills are required for online learning. For example, a mother may resort to an online degree if she cannot afford a babysitter. She may never have had any computer training, which can affect her ability to enroll a class that would require a web conference.

The recognition of quality of online degrees varies because of these situations. There are different types of technologies used in online learning. There is a “synchronous” technology that delivers a class when all pupils are present at the same time, for what can be considered a web conference.

“Asynchronous” technology is the opposite in which the student gathers all information and materials on their own schedule. People question online learning because when a student is required to complete assignments and testing, it is hard to control cheating. The students lack a teacher to monitor testing outside of the classroom. For some schools, the answer to this requires that a student take an exam in a controlled setting, usually held at the school.

The public perception of online degrees is argued that certain fields of study may be more acceptable than another. While this is disputed, class instruction may be the exact same whether lectured in class or online. There may be no special designation for one or the other.

Every school has advisors and counselors designed to help fulfill a students needs. These advisors can help determine whether or not online learning is a good fit for each and every individual student. Whatever you decide to do just know that getting an education, whether online or offline, is very important for your future.

Is an Online Degree Right For You

Posted By DavidPatullo on November 13, 2009

Are you considering an online degree, then if you are you need to stop and read this article before you go any further. Many people make the decision to attend an online school just out of the blue. This is the wrong reason to decide to get your education. If you ask many people why they are getting an online degree many of them will tell you that they are doing so to prove something to somebody. Maybe they ran into an ex girlfriend, maybe they have been made to feel like a loser in the past, whatever the reason may be; you need to make sure that you are doing this for the right reasons. You also need to make sure that you make a researched and informed decision. This article will explain all the things that you need to think about before the decision is made. In addition it will tell you things to consider when trying to make the decision.

First you need to determine the reasons that you are pursuing a degree online. Maybe you are tired of being in the mail room, maybe you are trying to get a job in a field you have always wanted to work in. Regardless of the reason you need to do it for the right reason and make sure that the degree you attain is one that you can do something with, and is in a field that you are comfortable with being in. A degree is useless if you get it for reasons that are important to you.

When you are seeking out a college to attend you need to find out about financial aid. This is important because one college may accept a certain type of aid while another will not even process an application for the same kind of aid.

Look at the different degrees that are offered. Is there a degree offered in a field that you are either interested in or one that you can excel at? Many schools offer different types of degrees and these vary in the major along with the level. Montana State may offer a Masters in English, yet the University of Montana may only offer a Bachelors in English.

The next thing that you need to look at is the course schedule. Are the courses offered during times that will work around you schedule, or are they set time classes that are not negotiable? This will play very heavy in you decision to take classes at that particular college. In addition going back to the fees for a moment you also need to compare which ones are the cheaper of the two for you to attend. One college may run one to two thousand cheaper than another college that is comparable in the things you are looking for.

In the end it all comes down to you. The decision as to why you are attending an online college will be yours. The degree that you receive will be your decision. The amount you pay to attend the online college will ultimately be yours to make. So in the end you might as well make sure that you are doing all this for your reasons and not those of other people. I hope this article has been of some help to you. College is a very important decision to make it is not one that needs to be taken lightly, regardless of whether you are a freshman out of High School or a single mom returning to school.
